Why Your Esthetician Marketing Isn’t Getting More Clients (And How to Fix It)

Why Your Esthetician Marketing Isn’t Getting More Clients (And How to Fix It)

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking:

“I’m posting consistently.”

“I’m running specials.”

“I’ve boosted posts.”

“I bought another certification.”

“So…why am I still not getting clients?”

You’re not alone.

In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see isn’t bad marketing at all.

It’s confusing marketing.

And believe it or not, confusion starts long before Instagram, Facebook, your website, or your pricing.

After coaching estheticians for years—and after making this exact mistake in my own businesses—I’ve realized something that completely changed the way I think about marketing.

Your business can offer everything.

But your marketing cannot say everything.

That one lesson has helped me build, sell, and now teach business in a way that actually gets remembered.

Let’s talk about why.

Why Most Esthetician Marketing Doesn’t Work

Open Instagram for five minutes.

One expert tells you to post before-and-after photos.

Another tells you to show your personality.

Someone else says you need educational content.

Then someone tells you to jump on trending audio.

Another says you need memberships.

Another says gift cards.

Another says retail.

Another says Black Friday promotions.

Before long your Instagram looks like someone dumped your entire treatment menu into social media.

Facials.

Waxing.

Chemical peels.

Microneedling.

Dermaplaning.

Lashes.

Retail.

Memberships.

Holiday specials.

Sound familiar?

The problem isn’t that any of those things are wrong.

The problem is they’re all competing for attention.

When clients land on your page, they shouldn’t have to figure out what you’re known for.

If they have to think…

They usually keep scrolling.

Your Esthetician Marketing Can’t Say Everything

Esthetician creating Instagram marketing content for a beauty business.
Posting about everything often leads clients to remember nothing.

When I owned my medical spa, we offered almost everything.

Botox.

Fillers.

Lasers.

HydraFacials.

Chemical peels.

Waxing.

Hair extensions.

Facials.

And we were successful.

So let me be very clear:

I am NOT telling you to remove services from your menu.

Instead…

I want you to separate your services from your marketing.

They’re not the same thing.

Your business can absolutely offer multiple services.

But your marketing should give clients one clear reason to remember you.

What I Learned From Building My Medical Spa

One thing I did without even realizing how powerful it was…

Every employee became known for one thing.

One esthetician became known for microblading.

Another became known for lashes.

Another became known for hair extensions.

Here’s something people don’t realize…

They weren’t locked into that forever.

In fact, I almost always started new estheticians with lash extensions because it created recurring appointments every two weeks.

That steady income bought them time to build the specialty they really wanted.

Later…

We shifted their marketing.

Their niche evolved.

Because your niche isn’t a tattoo.

It’s allowed to change.

But at any given moment, people need one simple reason to remember you.

The Biggest Mistake I Made In My Coaching Business

Ironically…

I made this exact same mistake after I sold my spa.

When I started coaching estheticians, I thought I had to teach everything.

Hiring.

Pricing.

Leadership.

Reception systems.

Retail.

Marketing.

Compensation.

Digital courses.

Mastermind.

Memberships.

If you’ve followed me for a long time, you probably remember all those courses.

My thought process was simple.

“I’ll build a huge library, and people can buy whatever they need.”

It sounded smart.

It wasn’t.

Because every single day my marketing changed.

Monday I talked about hiring.

Tuesday I talked about pricing.

Wednesday I talked about leadership.

Thursday I talked about receptionists.

Friday I talked about marketing.

I wasn’t creating clarity.

I was creating confusion.

Even worse…

I was confusing my own assistant, Brandy.

Every few weeks I’d decide we were going in a different direction.

She never knew what we were building.

And honestly…

Neither did I.

That was a hard lesson.

How To Simplify Your Esthetician Marketing

If I landed on your Instagram today…

What would I think you wanted to be known for?

Not everything you offer.

Just one thing.

Because here’s the truth:

Confused people don’t book.

They scroll.

They compare.

Then they leave.

If people have to work hard to understand why they should choose you…

They usually won’t.

And that’s not because you’re untalented.

It’s because your message isn’t clear.

Your Brain Wants One Thing To Remember

Think about your own town.

Who’s the brow expert?

Who’s known for lashes?

Who’s the blonde specialist?

Who’s the acne expert?

You probably answered those questions immediately.

Not because they’re the only people who offer those services.

But because they own one thing inside your brain.

That’s exactly what great marketing does.

It creates a shortcut.

When someone has a problem…

Your name immediately comes to mind.

What Do You Want To Be Known For?

Esthetician planning a marketing strategy for business growth.
Before creating more content, decide what you want clients to remember about your business.

Maybe you love treating acne.

Perfect.

Talk to acne clients.

Maybe you’re incredible with women over forty experiencing hormonal skin changes.

Talk to them.

Maybe you’re amazing at correcting pigmentation.

Own it.

Maybe you specialize in mature skin.

Lead with that.

The mistake I see estheticians make is trying to speak to everyone.

Ironically…

The more people you try to reach…

The fewer people feel like you’re talking directly to them.

Specific beats general every time.

But What If I Pick The Wrong Niche?

This is the question I hear constantly.

“What if I choose the wrong thing?”

Here’s the good news.

You’re allowed to change.

Remember my employees?

They changed specialties.

They evolved.

Your marketing can evolve too.

You are not making a lifetime decision.

You’re simply choosing what you want people to remember right now.

That’s a much easier decision.

My Biggest Breakthrough

Eventually I stopped trying to be known for digital courses.

I stopped trying to sell everything.

I got honest with myself.

There was one thing I couldn’t stop showing up for.

This podcast.

I love teaching.

I love helping estheticians avoid the mistakes I made.

When I finally leaned into that…

Everything became easier.

My marketing.

My sponsorships.

My messaging.

My content.

Nothing changed because I suddenly became smarter.

Everything changed because I became clearer.

The Bottom Line

If you’re struggling to get more clients…

Don’t immediately redesign your website.

Don’t rewrite your bio.

Don’t create fifty new Reels.

Instead, ask yourself one simple question:

What do I want to be known for?

Because your next breakthrough probably isn’t another marketing strategy.

It’s clarity.

When people understand exactly why they should choose you…

Booking becomes much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn’t my esthetician marketing working?

Many estheticians assume they need more content or better social media strategies. Often, the real issue is that their message is too broad. When potential clients can’t quickly understand what you’re known for, they move on.

Can I offer multiple services and still market effectively?

Absolutely. Your treatment menu can include many services, but your marketing should highlight one specialty or transformation that helps clients remember you.

How do I market myself as a solo esthetician?

Start by identifying what you want to be known for. Build your content, website, referrals, and social media around that one clear message instead of trying to promote every service equally.

Do I have to niche forever?

No. Your niche can evolve as your business grows. The goal isn’t to limit your business—it’s to give people a clear reason to remember you today.

Ready to Find What’s Really Holding Your Business Back?

Most estheticians think they need to fix everything at once.

In reality, it’s usually one number that’s quietly hurting the entire business.
